Located side-by-side in Fairfax County, Reston and Herndon share a border, but they offer completely different lifestyles. As a local expert, here is how I help my clients choose between them.
Reston: The Master-Planned Canopy
Reston is famous for being a master-planned community built into nature. With over 50 miles of trails, multiple lakes, and the bustling Reston Town Center, it blends outdoor living with metropolitan convenience. Because of the Reston Association, the community maintains a highly uniform, wooded aesthetic.
Herndon: Historic Small-Town Feel
Herndon offers a more traditional suburban experience centered around a charming, historic downtown. It lacks the overarching master-plan HOA of Reston, giving homeowners a bit more flexibility. Herndon is served by the Herndon Station and Innovation Center, offering a more traditional “park and ride” experience for those who prefer a quiet suburban lot but need a reliable 45-minute train ride into Washington, D.C.
- The Dulles Toll Road (VA-267): This is the literal spine of both communities. Reston offers multiple access points (Wiehle Ave, Reston Pkwy, Hunter Mill), while Herndon provides a direct, 10-minute shot to Dulles International Airport.
- Fairfax County Parkway (VA-286): This major artery bisects the two, offering a crucial North-South bypass. It connects you to the tech corridors of Sterling and Ashburn to the north, or the residential reaches of Burke and Springfield to the south.
The Verdict: Why Reston or Herndon?
- Why Reston? Choose Reston if you value architectural consistency, extensive private amenities (pools, tennis, lakes), and want to feel like you live in a forest despite being steps away from high-end dining, shopping, and Metro access.
- Why Herndon? Choose Herndon if you want a historic “Main Street” feel, a slightly more approachable price point, and the freedom to customize your property without the strict oversight of a large community association.
